While the Trung sisters stabilized the region, the Chinese were busy stalking their newly independent prey. And nearly two and a half years after the queens’ victory, the big, bad wolf finally headed south to reclaim what the Trung sisters had taken back. Unfortunately for the sisters, the wolf-pack leader was a Chinese general famous for his harsh fighting style. The Chinese called him the Wave-Calming General.6

He should’ve been dubbed the Tsunami of Death. After all, he marched in with a force of 20,000 highly disciplined fighting men. It was only a matter of time before the Trung sisters and their people were in over their heads.

Although we have no numbers, scholars guess that the Trung sisters didn’t have as much success in raising an army this time. After all, the mood had changed. Locals had returned to their families and their farms, fishing boats, and villages. Few were interested in fighting again.

Still the sisters prepared the best they could. They reminded their people that they were fighting for their way of life, their pride, and their independence.

But as the professional killing machine known as the Chinese army marched on, many locals were intimidated. They began to question the sisters’ leadership. Yes, their people had a long history of strong ruling women, but after 150 years of Chinese occupation—when women were devalued—not everyone felt comfortable with the queens in charge. This led to infighting. Some of the people ran. Others went to the Chinese side.

But not the tough Trungs. Despite their diminished support, for them it was independence or die.
